    Psalm 20:7

    Who To Vote For

If the pundits are to be believed, the future of the world depends on the choice that we make in this election.  But what happens if the WRONG candidate is elected?

    We better get it right.

Perhaps you have already voted, did you vote for the RIGHT one?

One of the difficult things about determining for whom you will vote is there is no party that has a monopoly on right.  There is no party that has got it all together.  You may have your favorite, but if you were honest there are positives and negatives.

    So, Maybe I just won’t vote …

Samuel Adams said: “Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote… that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country.”

Well Citizens … it may be hard to do … but we have some decisions to make

“The church must take right ground in regards to politics. . . . The time has come for Christians to vote for honest men. . . . God cannot sustain this free and blessed country, which we love and pray for, unless the Church will take right ground.”- Charles Finney

“Elections belong to the people. It is their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.”
    Abraham Lincoln

So, who are you going to vote for?

Psalm 20:7(NIV84) says Some trust in chariots and some trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God

Read … Psalm 20:1-9 but I will just focus here on v7

    1. Some Trust in Chariots

You’ve seen enough movies to picture a chariot

It was a vehicle pulled behind horses.  It was framed in wood in a semi-circle.  Leather and metal were used to bind it together.  The floor of the chariot was made of rope woven together which would create a springy cushioned ride.  The Wheels were low to the ground for a low center of gravity and stability.  There were no seats generally in a chariot, because the chariot wasn’t a pleasure vehicle.  Strapped to the side of the chariot in crossed fashion were quivers and a case for bows, because this was a *war vehicle*.  This vehicle wasn’t generally used for peace.

And David says … “Some trust in Chariots”

    “SOME”

Usually there were two men in a chariot, the “charioteer” or driver and the “warrior” and occasionally a third man or captain who had charge over the other two.

However, when the KING rode a chariot into battle … he rode alone into battle.  He would tie the reins to his waist and keep his hands free to fire his bow or use other weapons.

David said “some trust in chariots”

    Who Will YOU Trust?

    Some Trust in War Machines

    Some Trust in a Vehicle

Some Trust in the larger Vehicle that will move them forward and place their hope …

    How will you Vote?

Some … Trust in Chariots – But … then David says …

    2. Some Trust In Horses

The Chariot isn’t moving anywhere without the horse.

A car isn’t moving anywhere without the engine

While chariots were pretty singularly used, horses served a lot of purposes.

Chariot drivers might see an individual horse as dispensable, lose one, get another …

… but the horse IS indispensable

    The Horse was a commodity

The Horse was mostly a nameless, entity.

It served a purpose, but it was foundational.

As I said it was the engine.

Without the Chariot, the king and his warriors are outmaneuvered in battle

Without the horse the Chariot was a piece of furniture.

I’m sure many in David’s day had argued the value of the horse or the chariot

David said, “Some Trust in Chariots and Some Trust in Horses …”

We could imagine, if you will, that one of our political parties was the Vehicle that can move our country.  Perhaps One Candidate represented the war machine to save us in a day of need.

And perhaps we could imagine that one party was the engine to move that Vehicle.  Perhaps one party represented the nameless faces that are indispensable to the success of the forward motion or defense of our country.

And thus, we would argue for one over the Other

The “Chariot People” would say “we have to have bigger better chariots, we need to place our emphasis on the development of the best Vehicle to move our country, the best Vehicle to defend our country” …

because – “some still trust in Chariots”

The “Horse people” would weigh in on the debate to say “that’s all fine and dandy but without the horses, the best chariots will be nothing.  Take care of the details, take care of the engine or you won’t go anywhere.  If you don’t feed it and water it, if it’s not healthy and happy, then the Chariot is not going anywhere.”

because – “some trust in horses”

We could really have a great debate between those Chariot and Horse People.

There is a funny thing though about Chariots and Horses; you can and should choose a chariot and horses.  I pray before I buy a car.  I try and buy the car that the Lord would have me to buy.

But – the chariot may turn out to be eaten up with termites.  The Wheels might fall of.  Thieves might steal my chariot.  A bigger or better chariot might defeat my chariot.  I may have been lied to by the chariot salesman.  The chariot factory workers might have been daydreaming when he put it together, and I get stuck with a bad chariot where I’ve placed all my trust.

My horse may turn out to be headstrong and unbreakable.  My horse may get a disease.  My horse may break a leg.  My horse might get shot out from under me.  My horse might just get old and die.  My horse might be older or sicker than it looks, or the horse salesman said it was.  And I end up with troubles where I have placed my trust.

    But David says,

“ some trust in chariots and some trust in horses …”

Interesting Some trust in ONE party the Chariot Party, and Some Trust in Another Party the Horse Party …

Now I’m not saying that the Chariot Represents one of our Parties and the Horse Represents another, but folks if you are placing your HOPE in one of our Political Parties to solve your problems, put gas in your car, a roof over your head, money in your retirement program, or heal your disease, you MAY be Disappointed …

Oh, but there’s a lot of hopeful people out there.

There are also a lot of fearful people out there

There are a lot of people who have placed all of their hope with one political party or candidate

There are a lot of people who are frightened by one party or candidate

And they will make their choices based on the hope they have placed, or the fear that grips them …

… but David offers us an alternative way of thinking…

David said “some trust in Chariots, others in Horses but WE WILL TRUST …”

    3. In the Name of the Lord Our God

Folks, if claim to be a child of God, then we aren’t just, “SOME” folks.

We don’t go with the crowd …

People we shouldn’t approach that voting booth like everyone else.

We don’t put our hopes in that basket … NO

We Will Trust in a NAME …

      A. Name …

    Chariots don’t have names …

Well I know there are some of you crazy guys out there that name your car,  but we are talking about a Chariot here just used for a battle, I know there are names for tanks and airplanes too … But it doesn’t really have a name, it’s an inanimate object … it is NOT a person.

The kinds of horses we are talking about here were also nameless, they were just property for the purpose of driving the chariot

But “a Name” carries with it authority and power, position

Neither one of our Candidates has a name that will still matter 500 years from now.  Neither of our parties will matter at the end of all things …

But WE … Trust in A Name …

    JESUS …

Oh, Gabriel came to Mary and Joseph and said that Mary was going to conceive, and bear and child and his name would be “JESUS”, because he will save his people from their sins

Peter preached in Acts 4:12 that, Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

    THERE is a Name

    I know a name

    No other name

We Trust in the Name Of the Lord … the Authority, and the Power

      B. The Lord Our God

    Philippians 2:10–11 (CSB)

10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

We don’t just believe in ANY name, we don’t just hope in ANY name, we have placed our hope our trust, our lives in the hands of the Name, Jesus.

Jesus who is LORD, and not just Lord, meaning he has authority, but He is GOD …

He created Heaven and Earth, so he can RUN this Earth perfectly fine without us.

Jesus said in Matthew 28:18 that “All Authority had been given to me in Heaven and Earth”

The sun came up just as scheduled this morning … I think he can handle our Social and Economic Crises.

He handled the Rebellion of Satan and 1/3 of the Angels and kicked them out with a word … I think he can handle our military challenges

As a matter of fact, he can handle it if the WRONG One gets it.  If the WRONG PARTY has control, he can Handle it

Romans 13:1b says “there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.”

So that begs an interesting question.

      C. How Would Jesus Vote?

Stay with me for a minute on this one … I am NOT speaking for Jesus!

I am telling you what I believe are some things that scripture teaches us about God that we can see in the issues we face.

A While Back, I was at a conference, and one speaker suggested four things that he believes would shape Jesus’ voting

    • For-Life — Jesus Created all life, he sustains life, he is the giver of life, and is the only one who can take it away.  Job 1:21 said, the Lord gives and the lord takes away blessed be the name of the Lord.  Oh my but that means ALL life.

    • For Morality — we live in a world where the distinguishing marks between right and wrong has been removed in most cases.  Perversion and Greed seem to run unchecked in the name of freedom and capitalism.  Right is RIGHT … and Wrong on Top of Wrong doesn’t equal a right

The glory of God not only includes love and grace, but also judgment and wrath.  He is a holy God and calls us to Holiness as well.

    • For Family – the oldest ceremony in the history of humans is the ceremony of marriage.  Marriage is a sacred thing.  Marriage is also a picture of Christ and the Church.  When we distort the family we distort a picture of Christ and the Church, God and his Children.  Distortion like that confuses and distorts the very Gospel of Jesus Christ.   We can vote that value, but remember we live in an ungodly world, and we are a church.  Vote your values but don’t expect everyone to agree.  But we are the Church and We can Live our Belief

Finally, this preacher also pointed out that he believed that Jesus would vote

    • For God – We do not know what the future holds.  It seems that we are closer every day to the end of all things.  However, we don’t know that, and the only thing that we know to do is call our nation to repentance and turning toward God.  Jesus came with a message “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”  Jesus would call us to the Father

But you know folks those four things are not the only things that are important to Jesus.  He would also be:

    • For Poor
    • For Prisoner
    • Pro Hungry
    • Pro Thirsty

Matthew 25:35-36 Jesus said “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat … thirsty and you gave me … drink … stranger … invited me in … needed clothes … you clothed me … sick and you looked after me … in prison … came to visit me … whatever you did for one of the least of these … you did for me”

    • For Education

Proverbs 22:6 train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it

And those issues are also important issues in every election

But you know what people, we may not be able to control the life, morality, and marriage laws ourselves which is why those issues are so very important in every election.

And while we DO need politicians who are concerned about the other issues and can move our government toward solving those issues.

But you and I, in the church, shouldn’t have to VOTE on the poor, prisoner, hungry, thirsty, and uneducated.  We have been told to do those things as individual Christians and the as Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.  As a matter of fact, He says that many who have called him “Lord”, don’t really know him, and haven’t shown their knowledge of him in their actions toward those in need.

    But then …

      D. How Should I Vote?

We MUST be involved in the political process

“Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it.” William Penn

“The only thing needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”
    Edmund Burke,

Never be afraid to stand with the minority which is right, for the minority which is right will one day be the majority; always be afraid to stand with the majority which is wrong, for the majority which is wrong will one day be the minority.

    William Jennings Bryan

“Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.”
    John Quincy Adams

THERE ARE important Issues and they SHOULD shape the way we vote …

    How should I Vote?

    • Prayerfully – before you are shaped by political pundits or religious leaders, I need to Seek God’s Face.  Our answers must come from the throne room before we make a decision …
    • Carefully – don’t just go in and vote carelessly or without purpose.  I personally never vote straight ticket … I vote what I know to be true and important to me.  It takes longer, but if your vote matters, you should vote carefully
    • Conscientiously – that is to vote with a consciousness of the moral goodness or blameworthiness of one’s own conduct, intentions or character with a feeling of obligation
    • Faithfully – VOTE, it is your right and your DUTY

    Vote

Be concerned with the results … but

      E. Who Will I Trust?

“Give me a hundred men who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I will shake the world. I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; and such alone will overthrow the kingdom of Satan and build up the Kingdom of God on earth.” John Wesley

Our Hope is in God Alone.  If you know him personally as your own Lord and God, then you need not Fear anything.  If you have never given your heart to him, I offer you Jesus, he is our ONLY Hope.  He is our ONLY Answer.  He is our ONLY Reason to Life

Folks we do not have to fear the growing shadow of evil because I know who the Sun is.  I know where the Light is coming from So I will not fear the shadows …

Do the dark Shadows a seem bit scary?

Helen Keller said “Keep your face toward the Sun and you cannot see the shadows”

    Where is our Hope?

If you counted all the verses and found the Center Verse of Scripture in the Bible, it would be Psalm 118:9 – the CENTER VERSE in the Bible …

It is Better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man

    Are you afraid?

Psalm 56:3 when I am afraid, I will trust in you

Now what I have tried to do today is give you principles to challenge you on HOW to vote … BUT … I DID promise you that I would tell you WHO to vote for.  …

Well let me see if I can break it down to the important things, the things that we talk about and introduce you to the right candidate

    • Executive Experience?

Well … as an Entrepreneur, Creator, and Inventor, he left a lucrative position to begin a new venture.  He handpicked a dozen leaders whom he developed and set them loose.  They have transformed a regional venture into a multi-national organization servicing and including millions of employees and ambassadors, and this endeavor has continued for nearly 2000 years.

Today he continues in the tri-unified Board of Directors of every facet of the Universe

    • Economics?

Well it is said he owns the cattle on a thousand years, but more than that he developed, understands and implements the principles of planting, nurturing, and harvest.

He can turn a lunch into a meal for thousands, so I think he can make sure you have enough to eat.

He went fishing one day and came up with the tax money needed for he and his disciples.

    • Social Programs?

He has taught his followers to Feed the Hungry, Visit the Prisoner, Give water to the Thirsty, Clothes to the Naked.  His followers have been known to sell their goods and give to those in need.  They have been known to meet the needs of strangers and friends alike

    • Retirement Plan?

In his Father’s House are many Mansions, and He has gone to prepare a place for me so that where He is I can be as well.

    • Suffering and Sacrifice?

The word is Expiation, it means atonement.  He went into the teeth of the storm of accusation.  He went through an illegal trial.  He withstood a horrific beating.  Then he was sentenced to die on a cross and suffered in dignity, grace, forgiveness, love, never uttering a word in his own defense.  He sacrificed himself that those who would come after him would not have to die, and even if they do would be resurrected to live forever.

    • Provision?

His Divine Power has Given us EVERYTHING we Need for Life and Godliness (2Peter 1:3)

    So then,

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce to you the ONLY Candidate you ever Need … Please Join me and

Vote for the Lord Jesus Christ!

    Wonderful Counselor

    Mighty God

    Everlasting Father

    Prince of Peace!

    Place your Trust in Him

Use Your Chariot, but if it’s broken, fix it or ditch it, but TRUST God

Use Your Horse, if it’s sick, nurse it back to health, if it’s lame shoot it,

But place your TRUST in Jesus Christ

    Vote Jesus

Vote with your Heart, give it to him

Vote with your Head, Surrender to him

YOU and I must Change and Surrender to him, Become Like Him

    He IS Lord

    He Is God

    You might as well follow all the rest of Creation;

And Vote Jesus Christ this Year and for Life.

  • Even More – 1 Thessalonians 4:1

    October 30th, 2024

We ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received instruction from us on how you should live and please God – as you are doing – DO THIS EVEN MORE

I’ve been a competitor all my life – it was part of the nature of the house I was raised in – get better, do better, be better.

It can be a weight, if abused, but it is still important. I’ve played sports, music, games, and I’ve coached, taught, and learned. But now, I’m getting old, well I AM old, but still learning. In golf, flyfishing, now running, I’m always trying to get better.

Paul writes the Thessalonians, perhaps his first letter, if not Galatians. They had made great progress, but had faced great opposition and persecution. He talks in 1 Thessalonians 4 about past, present, and future.

v1 – you received instruction… you are doing (it)

Then in vv13 and following, he says that we will die, or Jesus will come and v17 we will always be with the Lord… so v18 encourage one another with these words

Which Words? Is the encouragement just that Jesus is coming, and Heaven is our future? What about right now?

    v1 do this even more

v3 God’s will… your sanctification… that you keep away from immorality

v4 control your own body holiness and honor

v6 – don’t take advantage of a brother or sister

v7 WHY? for God has not called us to impurity (Colossians 3:5 tells us to put do death the sinful nature)

Paul is saying- we can’t say, “well that’s just the way I am” – NO. While we are all sinners short of God’s glory that isn’t an excuse.

Live in Holiness / Sanctification. The same word, hagiasmos – is used in v3 and v7 translated sanctification and holiness – But the word is used in different yet related forms.

v3 – hagiasmos is nominative meaning the subject and in v7 hagiasmos is dative the purpose of the action

God is shaping us, changing us, so that our “outside” be transformed to match our justified “inside”. Sanctification is the subject and holiness is the purpose.

I know that’s a deep water, but I just want us to think it through and let is ferment. In this process of the Holy Wine maturing, then Paul says…

v9 – brotherly love… and he stops and says I don’t have to teach you, you know that, God taught you that, to love one another… v10 you are doing it everywhere – Praise God…

BUT… we encourage you to do this EVEN MORE

So go back to v1 we ask and encourage you… how you should live… as you are doing… have done… DO THIS EVEN MORE

Coach Paul here says, “nice shot, good game, but let’s step it up.”

Make a mental list of good things you are doing in Christ right now. It’s ok, make a list, you believed, you learned, obeyed, served, worship, witness… what else are you doing? You aren’t bragging, just remembering…

    That is GREAT – Praise God – That’s It…

NOW – do that EVEN MORE

Loved your neighbor – EVEN MORE

Forgave a brother – EVEN MORE

Fed the Hungry, Clothed the Naked, Visited the Sick / imprisoned – EVEN MORE

We need to be EVEN MORE people, because we come from an EVEN MORE God. We are part of an Even More Faily

Romans 5:15 says, the gift is not like the trespass… how much more… the grace of God and the gift… OVERFLOWED

Even More… not just life, but Abundant Life, Victorious Life, Eternal Life

Oh I don’t have time to preach this, but I love it this passage.

We need some Even MORE, Yes MORE Folks.

v12 Why? SO THAT you might behave properly in the presence of outsiders

Why? The World is watching and are on the outside of Grace. We want to invite them IN and want them to believe that IN is a Place for them to be.

Brag on God verbally – YES… but Brag on him in the Lifestyle Way we Live… that they might believe and Receive it for themselves.

  • Moses Looked On Their Burden

    October 16th, 2024

Exodus 2:11, Hebrews 11:24-26, and Acts 7:24-25 Speak about perhaps the lowest point in Moses’ life. It was a pivotal moment. Much was used by God for good, but some mistakes as well.

Let’s look at and just make some observations and see what the Holy Spirit inspired Word says of it and then make some observations about becoming active in hard circumstances.

You know, I’m sure, that Moses was born of the children of Israel, living in Egypt, under great duress as the people had become enslaved. His mother protected him, and he was taken in and raised by Pharoah’s own daughter. He had everything that could be imagined. He was raised with wealth and education as if the Prince of Egypt. Yet, his people were suffering.

“When he was GROWN”, Exodus 2:11 tells us, he would have been roughly 40 years old.

years later, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people and observed their forced labor – CSB

when Moses was grown… he went out unto his brethren and looked on their burdens – KJV

That word – bsiblot = burden bearing forced labor

He knew who he was, and where he came from. His own mother had weened him probably to 5 or 6 years old and would have taught him about the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But he also had been raised in Pharoah’s house.

At 40 he had seen it, perhaps it had started to boil over. But this day, he saw it and felt it, it hurt, it angered him, and he responded. he saw an Egyptian, striking a Hebrew, one of his people 12 Looking all around and seeing no one, he struck the Egyptian dead and hid him in the sand.

Was he just? Was this righteous?

    • He saw what was happening. The Egyptian whether a taskmaster or just an individual we aren’t told, but he struck the Hebrew. It does not say that the Hebrew was killed. However, the attack was unjust against the Hebrew.
    • Should we / Can we defend the defenseless? YES. But action should match circumstance and be for good, toward change, and just in response and intended for protection and/or defense.
    • Moses “looking all around” – premeditation – Moses could have attempted to stop the action, brought the perpetrator to further authority, Moses WAS a Prince – he could have corrected the Egyptian – But what did he do? Premeditated Murder – then when found out, he ran away to the desert, because we are told that when Pharoah found out he wanted to kill Moses.
    • Again, he could have sought understanding, change, justice. He even, if unjust, could have rallied the Hebrews, sought the Lord God, organized an effort against the injustice, a national effort, even war could have come. But instead he reacted, planned, and killed

Did good come in spite of this? Yes

Hebrews 11:24 says he refused to associate with people abusing his people

v25-26 tells us he in essence laid down his wealth for poverty looking ahead to reward

v27 he left Egypt behind, and persevered as one who sees the God who is Invisible

Now to be fair, the book of Hebrews has the benefit of 20/20 hindsight… and Moses didn’t see all of this at once. He learned it over time, 40 years in the desert, through hardship, sometimes he didn’t want to, but God was taking him to what could be and would be.

God IS there Through It All

Then in Acts 7 – that preaching Deacon Stephen tells this story and gives insight into what Moses was TRYING to do –

    • 7:24 he saw the mistreatment and came to the Rescue… and avenged – that word literally means to “do vengeance”. Let me say that while he had good intent, I believe he overreacted – Remember Vengeance and Defense are two different things. God says, “vengeance is mine”. We are not just enough, nor love enough, to carry out Vengeance, only God is.
    • 7:25 – he assumed the people would understand… but they did not. Timing and God’s leading are important. Praise God for his Omniscience and patience – 40 years pass and God reveals himself again to Moses.
    • I wonder, could it be that God could have done all he did for Israel SOONER if Moses had been in proper order? Perhaps

So, let me just hit some bullet points for us to consider in regards to responding when we see the burden of People and seek to join the Effort…

    1. Grow Up – when he was grown – Time is a beneficial Tutor and Mentor
    2. Get Outside what is normal and comfortable – he went out – we need to get out more and see for ourselves
    3. Go Look – take notice, pay attention, ask questions, examine – he observed, that word means “spy”
    4. Get a Feel for the Burden of Others – what is the weight they bear?
    5. Give a Measured, God-led Response – Moses definitely did not do that.
    6. Consider the Options – there are many things Moses could have done, but he just looked around to make sure no one would see, he had already decided what he was going to do.
    7. Come Near to God, Come Near to the Need
    8. Count the Cost – consider the potential Reproach of others for the sake of Christ and weight against lack of response.
    9. Continue with The Invisible God who will be Visible for Eternity. Surrender to the “Invisible” throne within us, knowing it will give way to the Glorious Appearing. Know that your reward it not always for now.

There is suffering all around. God does want us to be involved, but he wants us to Join Him and Trust his Timing. When we look this way and that, make sure we are looking to the Lord and then move as HE says

  • Working Together With Him 2 Corinthians 6:1

    October 8th, 2024

Today is the only day we are certain of, and NOW is the only time in that day we know about, so what will we do?

2 Corinthians 5 is so powerful and quoted, especially in the closing section beginning in v14 – “For the Love of Christ Compels”.

We know and often skip to v17 because we know we are imperfect and it is encouraging to know that in Chrit, the old has passed away… the new has come. YES!

But then Paul breaks this down, the purpose behind the what, and makes his case for our role in the work of God in Christ.

v18 – God has reconciled us to himself through Christ

Camping on that word for a minute, reconciled, the English definition is to restore friendly relations, to settle, or to make accounts consistent.

v19 In Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them

God wants relations restore, and accounts settled, but he is equally just as he is love. So, the debt still must be paid. We owed an unpayable debt, Christ paid the debt. God cannot ignore the debt, but he can allow us to receive the payment from Christ.

Then v21, he who did not know sin (i.e. no debt) became sin for us – so that we might become the righteousness of God.

Our account could be reconciled and when we receive it all was good – so we say – “WHEW – YES – See you in Heaven, Lord.” right?

6:1 says working together with him, we appeal to you, “don’t receive the grace of God in vain.”

in vain – kenos – empty, empty-handed, foolish

Just as if you receive a car, you don’t then walk. If you receive food, you don’t starve… but also you don’t ignore the giver, and you respond gratefully.

While I DO come to God with nothing, empty-handed. I can’t pay for my sin, and I can’t pay it back, or reimburse the sacrificed – YET – I continue in grateful service – working together with him

My Salvation IS by grace, through faith, first to last; but don’t receive it empty-handed

My grateful response is to serve – How? To What End?

Go back to 5:15 – he died for all SO THAT those who live should NO LONGER live for themselves, but FOR the ONE who died for them

And perhaps we might think, “yes I’ll live for Jesus…” Yet, because of the work of God in Christ – think about Isaiah 61:1-2 … to bring good news to the poor… heal the brokenhearted… proclaim liberty to captives… freedom to the prisoners… proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor… comfort those who mourn… That’s the work of Jesus and thus we cannot live for the one who died… without working together with Him

v18 reconciled with God… we are given the ministry of reconciliation… 19 he has committed the message of reconciliation to us

We can’t provide the reconciliation, but we can tell everybody where to find it.

v20 therefore we are ambassadors for Christ… we plead on Christ’s behalf, “be reconciled to God.”

Now Paul isn’t saying this “ambassador” work is just for preachers or missionaries … because the context of all of this is “if ANYONE is IN Christ… new creation…”

So back there to 6:1 – Don’t receive the grace in vain. And then he tells us the message we are delivering… See, now is the acceptable time, now / today is the day of salvation

NOW THE TIME – NOW the DAY

Back to 5:16 – yep we are circling around this again and again… From now on, then, we do not know anyone from a worldly perspective… Our view of Christ changed our view of ourselves, and our place in the plan of God.

When God reveals Christ to us, and we receive it by faith, then we were given new life AND a new role in the work of God to reconcile all who will believe and receive it.

    “But I’m not a preacher, or a missionary, I’m just a

    _____fill in the blank___________

Exactly – whatever it is that you are God has placed you there as his ambassador. He called you right where you are to take the reconciliation message to that realm, that sphere of influence. Right there, you become an ambassador. An Ambassador to the House of… to the school of… in the job of… on the street of… in the family of… at the hospital of…

From now on – we see it differently – we are Working Together with Christ

  • The Head of the Year

    October 2nd, 2024

Today happens to be the beginning of Rosh Hashana. It is considered “New Year” but obviously it isn’t a new year but the “Head” of the year. It is the beginning of new things.

In the Hebrew Calendar it was in the beginning of the 7th month. Many point to the fact that as Harvest is ending the Agricultural Year, it is Starting another year.

My wife was a teacher for 35 years and of course we had children, and so September/October always feels like the beginning of a new year, though it’s the start of the Fall.

But Rosh Hashanah is also a 10-day time of preparation before the Day of Atonement – the annual offering of sacrifice for the sins of the people.

Why am I talking about this, well it’s good to stop and consider what God is doing, has done, and can do. Then it’s also good before we seek forgiveness to stop and remember, recognize, repent, and return to the Lord.

So just a few thoughts. Leviticus 23:23-25 and Numbers 29:1 talk about this Sacred Day, Solemn Assembly

23 The LORD spoke to Moses: 24 “Tell the Israelites: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you are to have a day of complete rest, commemoration, and trumpet blasts—a sacred assembly 25 You must not do any daily work, but you must present a food offering to the LORD.” (CSB)

How do we prepare for the move of God in our lives?

    • Rest – stop working – be reminded that I cannot do anything to be worship of God’s love and God’s forgiveness
    • Commemorate – Remember what God has done for you. Make a list. Nothing is too small for inclusion. Nothing to insignificant to include. What has God done for you TODAY? Last week? Last year? In your life? In History? God is great! While God is not forced to do something for you that he has done in the past, he is able to do all things, exceedingly abundantly more than we can ask or imagine (Eph3:20) As you remember, be grateful, say “thank you”.
    • Blow Trumpet Blasts – This is about Anticipation and Subjugation. Trumpets were sounded to announce the coming of a king or an army. Those who heard should take notice, anticipate the coming, and then subjugate themselves to the power and authority. We all must come to a point of rest, remembrance, realization and anticipation that Jesus has come, Jesus has provided, and Jesus is coming again.

Psalm 47 is often read in Jewish New Year services. – READ Psalm

Clap Your Hands all you peoples

Shout to God with a Jubilant Cry

    FOR

    • The LORD is Awe-Inspiring
    • He is King over the whole earth
    • He Subdues
    • He chooses our inheritance

    Anticipate

    • God Ascends (to the throne) among shouts of joy
    • with the Sound of a Trumpet (announcing his coming/returning)
    • Sing Praise, to God, to our King, sing praise
    • Sing Wisdom (the Word of God the Truth of God)

    Know

    • God Reigns – he is in charge
    • God is Seated on the throne – he has a fixed position
    • The Leaders of the earth belong to him

Just some things to think on today… Let today be a new Day, a new Season, with God on the throne

  • Teacher and Lord – John 13:12-17

    September 24th, 2024

Jesus shares the Passover meal with his disciples – and midway through the evening, he does something that SHOULD have been done already by someone else.

Custom was if you had servants, they would be at the door washing the feet of guests as they arrive. Dusty, muddy, sandy feet from walking in sandals needed to be taken care of. However, if there were no paid servants, then the custom was that the FIRST guest to arrive would wash the other’s feet. Well, maybe that’s why people often arrive late to parties.

It would seem that they had been gathered for a while. They were reclining at the table when Jesus got up, yet no one had washed the other’s feet. Can’t you just see the first one arrives and KNOWS but doesn’t do. Then the next and the next.

Finally, Jesus got up from the supper, laid aside his outer garment, took a towel, poured water in a basin, and began to wash his disciples’ feet. They knew but had not done.

v12 – when Jesus had washed their feet, and put on his outer clothing, he reclined again and said… do you know what I have done for you?

v13 – You call me Teacher and Lord…

v14 If I … Lord and Teacher have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet

    v15 – for I have given you an example…

v16 – a servant (doulos) is not greater than his master… a messenger (aposololos) is not greater than the one who has sent him

v17 – if you know… you are blessed if you do…

Now, I’m not thinking today about teaching on service, or foot washing, but just asking questions…

    • If he is Master, are we good servants/subjects?
    • if he is Teacher, are we good students?

If he is Master (kyrios) we must be good subjects / servants. It is not even about the task, but about the Lord.

I don’t think they forgot what to do, they just didn’t want to do it.

Romans 6:13b says as those alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God… 15… you are slaves of the one you obey

If he is Teacher… you CALL me teacher… but are we learning? Learning is evident by DOING

Then the beatitude statement – if you know these things you are blessed (makarios = happy, blessed, fortunate, fulfilled) if you DO them

And my mind immediately went to James 1:22-25

Be doers… not hearers only. A hearer only is like one who looks in the mirror but forgets what he sees…

“Oh that’s a nice message pastor…” but then there is no change employed, no action is taken, no life transformed.

How do we become good servants? Good students?

    James 1:25

    • the one who looks intently into the law of freedom – there is a mirror, we must look into it. And I love the inserted thought of grace. People think James is just about “works”. But no-he says if we look into the “law of freedom” – that is “grace” it should show us things that change us. We have been set free and yet. Very interesting because I’m told that doulos – bondservant – was often one who HAD been set free, but chooses in gratitude to serve, bound to their Lord. We are subjects of servants of students of our Lord and Teacher
    • and perseveres in it – parameinas = continue, stay on it. We look intently, understand our freedom, understand our instructions, and look at ourselves and we stay at it, continue in it.
    • is not a forgetful hearer – but is a DOER who works
    • this one, this person will be blessed (makarios = blessed, happy, fortunate) IN… not about… but IN, what he does –

OH my the power in being good subjects and students of our Lord and Teacher.

Many grace saved people of God are unhappy simply because they will not lovingly DO what the Master, Lord, Teacher, says “do”.

He seeks to fulfill us as we complete his work.

Let’s be good Subjects, good Servants, Good Students, and find the Satisfaction IN it.

  • Close The Door – Matthew 6:6

    September 24th, 2024

Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Taher who sees in secret will reward you

So much in in Matthew 6:5-8 regarding prayer life

We often only focus on the “model prayer” in vv9-15, yet not on the expectation of the posture and position of the penitent one. You can model of vv9-15 all you want, but if we are just doing it publicly, we are missing the point.

v5 – Whenever you pray – Jesus uses two book ends here – the first is addressing the “God-Believing”

    • Must not be like Hypocrites
    • Pray to be seen
    • They have their reward
    • There is nothing wrong with public prayer but they are hypocrites because they appear to be seeking God, but they are seeking recognition. And do they have their reward – that word “reward” – hos misthos = wage, payment … so they get paid what they want to get paid and that’s the end of that. So, the question then is to whom do you pray, what do you seek to gain?

v7 when you pray – Then the other bookend – the Non-Believer

    • Don’t be like Gentiles – Pagans
    • Don’t Babble
    • many words don’t make you heard – there are those that don’t believe in God, but in a circumstance, “we will try anything”, “let’s have good thoughts” “let’s manifest it by our words”
    • Jesus says “the Father knows what you need before you ask” – he doesn’t need our information, he didn’t miss it

Well – Is God telling us NOT to pray? No, but in our desire and need to pray, what is our focus, where is our reward?

Don’t be like the self-absorbed God Worshiper, nor the self-indulgent false worshiper

    v6 but when YOU pray

    • Go Into Your Private Room – get alone, get to touch with the things you treasure
    • Shut the Door
    • Pray to the Father in secret
      • He Sees
      • He Rewards

The Focus is on communing with The Father

The Commitment is to separation from everything else

The Reward is from the Father. It is certain, and ultimately, The Father IS the Reward

WHEN – notice it says “when” not “if” – When you pray

    • Go In – there is a decisive action, “I will go” – and “go” is in the active, imperative tense – I must go. Go in to a place, a time, it’s not as must about the location as the intention – Go to Meet God and Only God
    • Shut Your Door – this instruction really stood out at me today – go in and close the door. Cut myself off from everything and everyone else. In this instance, I don’t need, don’t want their input, their answers, their approval. Shut off everything else, even my own preconceptions. (perhaps ask the question, “Lord what needs to be shut off right now as I pray?)
    • Pray to your Father
      • Come to him
      • Give it to him
      • He is YOUR Father – that means there is a relationship. He is the source of life, he loves you, he cares for you. Every good and perfect gift is from him. (James 1:17)
      • The Hidden ones meets you in the hidden place
    • He gives you the “Reward” – now this is a different word than in v5 – apodidomi = give up, give back, return, restore, award – there is an understanding of Grace, restoration, and reconciliation here.

Don’t be like the Believer who is only seeking earthly returns

Don’t be like the unbeliever that thinks they can manifest something with repetitive words, good thoughts, or “hocus pocus”

Be the one who seeks the Father, and his pleasure, his purpose, him personally do we seek.

Take a few minutes and go read Psalm 123:1-2; Psalm 18:1-3 and spend some time with The Father

  • Taking Captive Every Thought 2 Corinthians 10:5

    September 10th, 2024

I have quoted, taught, and preached on this passage many times. It is yet one of those verses/passages that perhaps we would like to ignore – but we must not. Even the thought to “put it aside” must be taken captive and made obedient to Christ.

v3 says “for although we live” – literally, peripateo “because we walk about, conduct ourselves, behave in a matter… in the flesh – sarki – physical earthly bodily – YET – we do not fight spiritual battles in that manner. We must engage in a spiritual pattern, a spiritual manner.

And don’t say, “I can’t” because v4 the weapons of our warfare are not flesh

If we were not equipped that would be a different conversation, but we know that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is in you, which you have of God.

So our weapons – hopla = tools, implements, weapons, armor – are powerful – dynata = able, could, influential men, man of power, possible – through God

why? it continues FOR – see God gives us all we need… Oh I remember another of those verses I love and hate – excuse removing verses – 2 Peter 1:3 – all we need for life and godliness

our Weapons are powerful for the demolition of strongholds

Yes – strongholds will rise and be built within and without, but through God, in Christ, by the Power of the Holy Spirit; we have powerful weapons for the demolition of those strongholds.

Follow the structure here: “Although” – we are in a fleshly world – “Since” – our weapons are NOT fleshly, and ARE powerful, and FOR demolition. (THEN) we “Demolish” arguments, pride against the knowledge of God…

AND – Take Captive Every Thought – that Greek word aichmalotizo = captivate, lead captive, make a prisoner – That’s what we are supposed to be doing and this isn’t a once, check the box, kind of thing. It is in the Present, Active, Participle, Plural Tense. That means this is something that we DO, we Are DOING, and we are doing to ALL things. It’s not just “take” but takING. It’s not just back then, but now, and now, and now, and now, always.

We take very thought captive- we do not give it freedom to run AMUK.

That’s a word I love. It’s such a funny sounding word, but powerful in description. It means to “behave in a violent an uncontrol. led manner.

We can’t control the arrival of false thoughts, or suggestions of ungodly thinking, but we CAN powerfully take those thoughts captive, chain them up, counter them with the truth of God’s Word and the Spirit’s direction, and make those thoughts obey Christ.

OH My – if we would live this, how free we would be – binding the attacks of the evil one to our thought life, before it ever becomes action.

And YES, we can, in Christ live like this.

I referenced, 2 Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has given us EVERYTHING required for Life and Godliness

Sometimes we think – oh this is just “Spiritual” stuff not “Life” stuff. No it is both. 1Peter 1:5 says by faith we are shielded by God’s power until the coming of final salvation.

his divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Hiim who called us (no one comes except the Father draws him John 6:44) by his glory and goodness – by these he has given us great and precious promises – SO THAT – through them you may share in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in this world because of evil desires

Oh my fellow travelers – the battle is real, but we have access to all we need.

What did the Great Yogi Berra say? “Baseball is 90% mental… the other HALF is physical” Wow that’s funny math… but do you get what he’s saying?

So here then, perhaps we are saying that Our Battle is 100% Spiritual and the other half is Mental – and so take captive every thought and make it obey Christ and then the Physical Half will take care of itself – selah

  • Where Is Your Thirst Quenched? Then What?

    September 4th, 2024

I started in a famous story of David and it took me through 3 passages and into Gospel of John.

The key here for David is the Sovereign Salvation and Precious Promises of a Covenant Keeping God.

It doesn’t matter what circumstances are present, if God is Present.

I’m a songwriter so in 2 Samuel 23 we have a song of praise from David listed as “these are the last words of David”. Now the account of those last days of David stretch over into 2 Kings. Yet, in some of those last days, David still shows his humanity. he does things he regrets, but then comes to the altar of God for forgiveness.

But I digress, 2 Samuel 23:5 David, singing praise, “Is it not true my house is with God. For he has established a permanent covenant with me, ordered and secured in every detail. Will he not bring about my WHOLE Salvation and my every desire?“

Well, is it true or not? It’s either all Jesus or it’s not all grace. Here is David, a great man with great deeds, and yet great failures. But he had a great God who knew all of that and secured his selection and salvation through it all.

David found God Alone could quench his thirst.

A few verses later in that 23rd chapter, it tells of David’s great warriors who served with him. Philistines had taken position over his hometown of Bethlehem. And David mentions in the struggle of battle, that he is thirsty for water from his hometown well outside the city gate of Bethlehem. The word there literally meant he “craved”. It wasn’t so much being “thirsty” I think as he was longing for home. “If only I had a drink from the well outside Bethlehem’s gate.”

Well, three warriors heard that and went to get it. They sneak out, passed the enemy lines, and got him some water from the well and brough it back to him.

He hadn’t sent them, they just heard his heart and risked their lives to get him a drink. HE REFUSED IT. He poured it out on the ground. Oh wait … not just “on the ground” v16 says “he poured it out to the LORD” . This was an act of worship. He sacrificed it to the Lord, saying “this is the blood of men who risked their lives.”

David thirsted for Home. David thirsted for Security. David thirsted for knowing that all was going to be well. David in this that God was on his side. God had provided warriors. David understood that he was loved, secure, that he his Safety and Security was wherever God was… so was wherever he may lead.

So then if you turn a few pages you come to 1 Kings 2 – as the time approached for David to die… He had solidified that Solomon would succeed him as King over Israel. and He tells his son how to “succeed”.

v2 Be Strong and Be a Man 3 keep your obligation to the Lord your God to walk in his ways… keep his commands… so that you will have success in everything you do and wherever you turn 4 and so that the Lord will fulfill his promise…

Yes, some of God’s promises are conditional. Sometimes God cannot bless because we will not follow.

But in regards to “thirst” – Be Satisfied with God’s Commands and God’s Promises, and find that God’s Presence will always be ENOUGH.

    What Then?

The byproduct then of faith in action is that it will flow from you to everything and everyone you touch.

My mind, thinking of thirst went to John 7:37-38. Jesus at a great week long feast of eating and drinking stands and states, “…if anyone is still thirsty let him COME TO ME and drink 38 the one who believes in me… will have streams of LIVING WATER flow from deep within him.

I think sometimes we read that and think it just means I’ll have water in me that will quench MY thirst and keep me filled. But it says WILL FLOW FROM. If it is flowing from… that means it’s flowing to. The Young’s Literal says Rivers out of his belly shall flow living water. Oh that’s GOOD!

David Had His Thirst Quenched by God and Faithful Servants… and that Water within flowed out Freely to all Around. When David poured out that water as an act of worship to God – it must have been stout inspiration because the next verses tell the exploits of “The Three”. They knew that God was the Object of their Worship, and David was their King, they could do anything.

As I close let me encourage you to take a minute and go read Isaiah 12. It’s a beautiful song of praise, just 6 verses … but in the middle vv 3 and 4 read…

You will joyfully draw water from the Springs of Salvation… Give Thanks To the LORD
